I'm writing these FAQ's to answer some recent questions about Ruby Forums.

Q: What is OCS Solution's relationship to Ruby Forums, and do they intend to commercialize it?

A: OCS Solutions owns the servers and employees the admin (me) of the board. OCS is not going to commercialize it. Instead, it is giving back to the Ruby community as it uses Ruby to power parts of their custom apps and hosting. We are never going to run outrageous advertisements, popup windows, or any other distraction to what we want these forums to be, a great place to talk about Ruby!

Q: Why use vBulletin, when Ruby is open source? Couldn't you have used a Ruby forum software package or at least phpBB / punBB, etc.?

A: We chose to run vBulletin because of its stability, great features, and wonderful interface. We simply feel its the best forum software package on the market currently.

In the future, we plan on converting to a Ruby / Rails based forum, but until the time comes when they surpass vBulletin in stability, performance, user experience, etc., we will continue to use vBulletin.

That being said, we strongly support open source, and are also offering mirror and free services to open source projects in Ruby to help the community.

Q: Are you trying to cause a split in the Ruby discussion community away from ruby-talk, or ruby-forum.org?

A: Absolutely NOT! We're trying to contribute to the discussion and help people find more information about Ruby, and add another place to talk about this wonderful language. We are NOT trying to siphon discussion away from other places. Why would we want to do that? We encourage any open-source endeavour in Ruby, and think that community involvement at any level on any website or service is wonderful!
